Wat Pho in Bangkok

Experience the cultural allure of Thailand

Located minutes away from the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Pho is also called the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. Known for its gilded Buddha statue that’s 46 metres long, the temple attracts both tourists and locals.

Get a massage

This is an excellent place to relax as tourists don’t really take the time to explore the temple grounds, so the temple is always very calm and quiet. Wat Pho is also where you can get one of the best Thai massages in Bangkok; the place is considered the leader in traditional Thai massages.

The Reclining Buddha

Needless to say, the Reclining Buddha is the main highlight of the temple. With 46 metres in length and 5 metres in height, the statue has feet that are 5 metres long. It’s also ornately decorated according to Thai Buddhist customs. This is a sacred place, so you are expected to take your shoes off before entering; also, you should dress modestly.

Other attractions

There are four chapels that house an extensive collection of Buddha statues, and the walkways are adorned with intricate murals. The courtyards are also a highlight as they feature funny-looking Chinese figurines.

Location and nearby accommodation

Wat Pho is found beside the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It’s around 20 minutes from Avani+ Riverside Bangkok Hotel. This is one of the most-visited attractions in the country, so tourists are offered a variety of accommodation options close to the temple; it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a hotel in Riverside Bangkok, not too far from the temple.

Other things to know

Wat Pho was the first university in the country to specialise in religious studies. Now, it is one of the best massage schools in the country, offering traditional Thai massages.
