Democracy Monument in Bangkok

A fitting tribute to democracy can be found at the elaborate political monument situated in the heart of Bangkok, vibrant capital city of Thailand. Home to a unique brand of culture impossible to find elsewhere, this lively locale is best explored from a quality Bangkok resort which is what you’ll find at the Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort & Spa. Situated in close proximity to fine dining as well as intriguing cultural venues, it is a fine choice of all the 5 star hotels in Bangkok. The city venerates the concept of democracy in the form of a traffic circle centerpiece situated on the expansive Ratchadamnoen Klang Road, at the Dinso Road intersection. The monument was erected in 1939 to memorialize the Siamese coup which heralded the onset of the country’s first constitutional monarchy, courtesy of Field Marshal Phibun, who wanted to establish a more westernized Bangkok. This unique cultural feature depicts a palm-leave manuscript box that holds the Thai constitution brought into law in 1932, poised atop two golden bowls, which sit on a spherical turret. Flanking the monument on four sides are “wings” extending 24 metres, representing the four branches of the Thai armed forces that orchestrated the coup. The site has since been the gathering point for a variety of demonstrations in protest of military regimes, in a true reflection of democracy in action.
