Whether you are a fan of chaotic markets or you simply want to know who needs to buy 10 kilos of flowers, Bangkok’s Pak Klong Flower Market definitely makes it on to any list of ‘things to see in Bangkok‘. If you are lucky to be staying at a hotel close to Chao Phraya River such as the Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok, you are within half an hour of the Pak Klong Flower Market. The area can be reached by taxi, tuk tuk or river boat.

Undoubtedly the largest wholesale and retail flower market in Bangkok, Pak Klong is also considered one of the largest flower markets in the world. The market has seen many changes of the years as it started back in the 18th century as a floating market. The area now overflows with stalls and shops selling an abundance of fresh flowers. Although it is technically open throughout the day and night, if visitors want to catch the market when it is most active, they need to arrive before dawn. The flowers sold in the market come from all over Thailand, even from far flung provinces such as Chiang Rai.

Visitors should not worry about starving during their excursion because interspersed with the flowers are the ever present Thai food vendors selling everything from meat skewers to freshly made papaya salad. After receiving its fresh midnight deliveries, the market is a beguiling assortment of flowers, including orchids, jasmines and lotus buds. Stall owners then set about the task of putting the flowers in order. This is often an opportunity to gain cultural insight as some shops specialise in making Phuang Malai, traditional flower garlands symbolising good luck, and Bai Sri, cone shaped arrangements used for ceremonies. At the end of the visit, visitors are likely to find themselves with a handful of flowers, innumerable photographs and one unforgettable experience.
