Bangkok was declared as the country’s capital in 1782 by King Rama I for strategic military reasons.
Most of the city’s fortifications were constructed during the city’s tumultuous past and still stand as great tourist attractions. The city has hence become one of the most visited places in the world.
The City Wall of Rama I
The City Wall of Rama I was constructed in 1782 is 7 km long, 3.6 m high and runs along the Chao Phraya River.
The wall has 63 gates and a fort complex at every 400 m. Unfortunately; as the threat of a Burmese invasion ceased, much of the forts and the wall was removed.
Those visiting the site will be able to see part of the wall along with a canon.
